After the Private View Sakina, James and I attended the East10 Open House architecture debate "Is creativity in architecture dead?" at the Allen and Overy LLP lecture hall, London E1. Debate panel: Alison Brooks, Marcus Fairs, Hugh Pearman and

It was an interesting, albeit manifesto filled event. We found it relevant, educational and necessary. As always, Joe Kerr spoke to the point (just as I remember from my student days in his lectures!). Thanks for coming along, I will invite you again.

(tip - I later realised the soundtrack (sound and vision) works rather well with the images of this quick time movie - so play the song/link as you watch the movie - more effective, will try and dub in effect later)

Aliens and other in-betweeners

Nada Prlja, "Local Globalism", 2007 - 2008
(source: http://www.landofhumanrights.eu)

Iniva panel discussion attended last night - very interesting and relevant to our own discussion on art and culture; through our spatial explorations in the Shoreditch area. Many new ideas grow from attending discussions, events, exhibitions - next time, come along.

Myself a 'trans-national, alien'.. and borderline artist/designer - living in a different place to that where I was born.. or, probably more accurately, 'in-between' the place where I was born (1), grew up (2) and where I now reside and work (3). Those students that attended the event had a rich and real experience and had the opportunity to meet the artists afterwards. Collaborative ideas, links made. Thanks Iniva.

"Gabriela Salgado, Curator Tate Modern and artists Nada Prlja and Alexandra Handal discuss the role of 'nation' in artists' work. Is the concept of ‘nation' still a relevant subject for artists working today in both their practice and the way we view their work? The panel will consider this in the context of nations being established over the past 50 years and the consequent effects of globalisation".

See you Thursday

Intro to Project - Shoreditch Showcase - site visit

Shoreditch
Showcase

University of Hertfordshire
BA (Hons) Interior and Spatial Design
(Heidi Saarinen)
2009/10
Project aim: To develop a design proposal for a showcase hub for a specific community in Shoreditch.
Objective: To design a site-specificstructure, embedding an exhibit/installation, through investigation into place, culture and community.
extract from Brief….

When you have found your site, you must start interacting with it and making proposals for an event/exhibition/ installation, relating specifically to that site – the showcase. This will act as a central hub for a specific group of people; a community. Consider historical, cultural and contemporary aspects to such a place.
Site and showcase must be joined (or not? – if this is the intention..). How do you show case inner secrets of an area? Look at it like cutting a slice out of the area – a section – and investigate and dig into this. You need to create a narrative for the showcase. The research and continued interaction and experimentation is therefore crucial for all further development of your brief.
On your journey, you will find a site. You will claim it – make it yours. Zoom in and start making drawings, recordings and clear proposals to what your design will be.. make contact with the occupiers, users..
We will start with a central site, Iniva/Rivington Place, the art centre and home to Iniva/Autograph, from which you will edge outwards for research in all directions to find your story of the area. Having a sound knowledge of the area is essential to the success of your proposal. You cannot design or place ideas without knowing why.
Record information in drawings, sketches and photographs/film. Talk to local people, spend time there, experience the area.
